Description: Breathing Heart is a kinetic installation that explores the intersection of urban anxiety and the biological impulse to survive. Utilizing an Arduino-controlled mechanism, a used plastic express bag, hand-sewn by me into a heart shape, rhythmically inhales and exhales. The inspiration for this work emerged during my daily New York City subway commute. Observing the heavy silence of the commuters, I felt the invisible weight of the metropolis.
The express bag, still bearing my home address, represents the fragility of the private self within the global machine of consumption and transit. This mechanical breath is a call for slowness and a visceral reminder that, even in the most stressful environments, our most radical act is the simple rhythm of a deep breath.
